Reflecting on 2018 and glancing ahead

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
The end of the year is often an opportunity for reflecting on the past year and developing aspirations for the new year.  AGA has been working diligently to meet your needs, and I thought I would summarize a few activities as part of this reflection.

Strategic plan
In the past year, we engaged in a process of strategic planning with the aim of better serving the needs of our members.  I had the following quotes in mind as we embarked on this process:

  1. A goal without a plan is only a wish.
  2. A bridge without a destination is a plank.
I’m pleased to give you a preview of our newly adopted mission statement: Empowering Clinicians and Researchers to Improve Digestive Health. With this mission as our north star, we refined our strategic plan, which supports quality patient care through education, training, guidelines, research and advocacy.

Agenda for clinicians
We are working to make certain that AGA meets the needs of our clinician members with relevant educational offerings, materials for patient education, and ensuring opportunities and funding for clinical research. DDW has been redesigned to be more “clinician-friendly.” The AGA Community has been embraced by clinician members who share difficult cases and discuss complicated issues. This year the AGA Community has worked through more than 350 cases together!

Maintenance of certification (MOC)
We have also had robust conversations about MOC. Along with the other GI professional organizations, we have been working to create changes in the MOC process.  We believe that the primary aim of professionalism in medicine is to encourage life-long learning, and that the current ABIM approach to MOC fails to do so.  I can assure you that we are working hard to make some common-sense changes that will achieve the aim of life-long learning, which will enable the high-quality care that we all strive to provide our patients.

AGA exists for you. I hope you will not hesitate to contact me and other AGA leaders and staff with your ideas about how we can best serve your needs.

On behalf of AGA, I want to wish all of you a very happy new year.
