Dr. Beyer runs a NIH-funded basic and translational science laboratory that explores the relevant molecular pathways in gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders. His research laboratory is particularly interested in understanding how ion channel proteins are involved in electro-mechanical and mechano-electrical coupling in GI motility and functional GI disorders. The work in the laboratory spans a wide range of experimental techniques with studies from single molecules to living organisms. Studies typically start from determining the precise localization of ion channels in specific cell types within the gastrointestinal tract, then understanding function using electrophysiology in single cells and tissues, and finally examining in vivo function in rodents and humans.
